Sydney, 3 November 2025 – The Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia (BCSDA) welcomes the City of Sydney’s draft Waste Reduction and Circular Materials Strategy 2025–2035, which sets a bold 10-year roadmap for embedding circular economy principles across households, businesses, and infrastructure.
The strategy outlines ambitious targets, including 90% residential landfill diversion by 2035, 40% of household waste source-separated for recycling, and a 15% reduction in residential waste generation, signalling a decisive shift toward a more circular and resource-efficient urban economy.
It also highlights the City’s investment in bio-conversion technologies that transform food waste into animal feed and fertiliser, alongside enhanced community recycling services, circular design programs for local businesses, and soft plastics and textile recovery.
BCSDA will make a submission on the consultation, reflecting its support for initiatives that reduce waste, drive material circularity, and accelerate Australia’s transition to a net-zero, nature-positive, and resilient economy.
“The City of Sydney’s strategy is an important step in demonstrating how urban centres can lead circular transformation,” said BCSDA CEO Andrew Petersen. “With stronger alignment across all levels of government and industry, we can scale circular innovation, attract new investment, and strengthen Australia’s competitiveness in a global low-waste economy.”
BCSDA’s submission will focus on opportunities for policy coherence, infrastructure scaling, and industry collaboration - particularly in sectors such as packaging, textiles, and hospitality - to ensure circular principles are embedded throughout value chains.
The consultation is open until 5 November 2025.
