The Role of Business in a Time of Conflict

20 May 2022

Sydney, Australia: The Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia will host its annual Fiona Wain Oration on May 27, which this year will go to the epicentre of the conflict in Ukraine.

The keynote speaker at the 2022 event will be Maryna Saprykina, the Head of the Board and CEO of the Centre for CSR Development Ukraine (CSR Ukraine), who will address attendees live from Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

CSR Ukraine is part of the global network partnership of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and has been vocal and active in uniting socially responsible business across Ukraine as an important step to victory in that country. There are stories of many businesses drawing from their savings to support Ukrainian troops on the frontline, even as most business owners are mostly resigned to the threat their country faces, to the extent that there's even a sense of business as usual.

“While businesses in Australia certainly face plenty of challenges, operating a business in a live conflict zone is something many of us would find difficult to comprehend,” said Andrew Petersen, CEO of BCSD Australia. “Maryna’s address at the Fiona Wain Oration will provide some unique insights into life running a business while your country is being invaded, into how do businesses support a country during an armed conflict, and does a conflict actually present opportunities?”

The Fiona Wain Oration is named in honour of Fiona Wain, BCSD Australia’s CEO during 1999 – 2010, who passed away due to cancer. The BCSD Australia Board established this Oration in recognition of her contribution to public policy in Australia.

This year’s event will be held virtually from 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. AEST, live from Kyiv and Sydney via Zoom.

You can Register to join the event here.
